There are nearly 400 million indigenous peoples in about 90 countries around the world, with highly diverse cultures, languages and customs. Despite having many differences, indigenous peoples share a common history of being marginalized and their ambitions undetermined, especially in sport. For example, indigenous youth have not always been given opportunities to participate in sport, indigenous athletes do not have the same opportunities to develop and excel as non-indigenous athletes and coaches often lack the understanding of indigenous communities and culture. This Declaration and the commitment and actions of its Signatories will change that!

Sport is an ideal learning ground for life’s essential skills, especially for young people. Sport teaches self-confidence, goal setting, being a team player, among many other things. Occasionally, sport is the opportunity that saves peoples’ lives. Sport unites communities and enhances Community Pride. Sport is universal. Participating in and having access to sport is a right that belongs to every person and this Declaration affirms and progresses those rights for Indigenous Peoples who are strong and resilient people connected to their lands and cultures.
