CGF President welcomes Games host announcement
As the host for the 23rd Commonwealth Games is announced as Glasgow, the Commonwealth Sport President Chris Jenkins, shares his excitement for what will be the biggest sporting event in the United Kingdom in 2026.
“We are absolutely delighted to confirm that we have finalised discussions with Commonwealth Games Scotland, and we are now able to confirm Glasgow as the host city of the 2026 Commonwealth Games. Glasgow 2026 will be the biggest sporting event in the United Kingdom in 2026, and the Scottish public, the UK, and entire Commonwealth can look forward to a true celebration of our uniquely inclusive and diverse festival of sport and culture.
“We know how much the Commonwealth Games means to athletes, with them regularly talking about how important they are and what it means to represent their nation. Glasgow 2026 will be different in some ways, but the compact footprint of the Games means the city will become a cauldron of sport, it will be uniquely immersive, making the fan experience more accessible than ever. It is an important first step in our strategic vision to reset and redefine the Commonwealth Games. We are looking to a future where, with host cities, we co-create a flexible, sustainable, and socially impactful Games with reduced costs and impact on the environment. By doing so, we are confident in increasing the scope of countries capable of hosting.
“For millions across the globe, the Commonwealth Games is a much-loved event, offering a point of difference to other multi-sport events through a truly integrated competition that places able-bodied athletes and Para athletes side by side. I will be talking this week with the Commonwealth Heads of Government at CHOGM in Samoa about the vital role the Commonwealth Sport Movement and the Games play in social development, and the important part Glasgow 2026 will have in showcasing the power of our Movement to the world.’’
