The Commonwealth Games Federation is deeply shocked and saddened by the death of Ugandan athlete Rebecca Cheptegei.

The 33-year-old runner, who represented her nation at major championships on the track, road, cross country and mountains, died on Thursday 5 September following an alleged domestic abuse attack.

CGF President Chris Jenkins said, ‘’On behalf of the Commonwealth Sport Movement, we express our profound sadness at the unspeakable and senseless killing of Rebecca Cheptegei. We stand with Rebecca’s family, the Ugandan Commonwealth Games Association and its athletes, and all female athletes.

‘’Such a heinous act must be the catalyst to strengthen our resolve to reduce violence against women. It is important that all sporting authorities work together to improve safeguarding policies for our female athletes both inside and outside the sporting environment.’’
