The United Republic of Tanzania joined the Commonwealth in 1961. The country borders on to the Indian Ocean to the east and has land borders with eight other nations.
Having made their debut in the 1962 Games, Tanzania achieved medal success at every Commonwealth Games from 1970 through to 2006. Their first ever gold medal came in the 1974 Games in Christchurch when the legendary Filbert Bayi took the blue riband 1500m title on the athletics track, beating the great New Zealander John Walker. The last gold medal came in Melbourne in 2006 when Samson Ramadhani won the men's marathon in front of the watching Filbert Bayi. In Glasgow in 2014 Tanzania took part in seven different sports.
The Tanzania National Olympic Committee was formed in 1948 and is responsible for organising the country's participation in the Commonwealth Games and the Commonwealth Youth Games.
