Samoa (formerly Western Samoa) joined the Commonwealth in 1970. It is an archipelago of nine islands at the centre of south-west Pacific island groups. The name Samoa, from 'Sa' (sacred) and 'Moa' (centre) means 'Sacred Centre of the Universe'.
The country made its Commonwealth Games debut in 1974 and have only missed the 1986 edition since that time. Boxing and weightlifting medals were the highlight of their inaugural Games in Christchurch with boxing providing a bronze medal at the 2006 Games in the Australian city of Melbourne. They won three medals, all for weightlifting, at Glasgow 2014.
They proudly hosted the Vth edition of the Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa’s capital Apia, from 5-11 September 2015.
The Samoa National Olympic Committee is responsible for organising the country's participation in the Commonwealth Games. The same body was successful for winning the right to host the 2007 South Pacific Games in their capital, Apia.
