The Central-Eastern African republic of Rwanda joined the Commonwealth in November 2009 during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Trinidad & Tobago. They made their Commonwealth Games debut at the 19th Commonwealth Games in Delhi, taking part in athletics, boxing, road cycling and swimming. They won their first ever Games medal at the Bahamas 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games – picking up Bronze in Women’s Beach Volleyball.

Having been established on 25th January 1984, the Rwanda National Olympic & Sports Committee is responsible for their participation in both the Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth Youth Games.
