The independent state of Papua New Guinea in the South Pacific joined the Commonwealth in 1975 a year after its National Olympic Committee was formally recognised. The country borders Indonesia and sits north of Australia and west of the Solomon Islands

Papua New Guinea (PNG) made their debut in the 1962 Commonwealth Games in Perth taking home a boxing bronze. Since then they have competed in every Games apart from Edinburgh in 1986.

The sports of boxing, lawn bowls and shooting have brought PNG medal success and they won their first swimming gold in the 2006 Games in Melbourne when Ryan Pini raced home in the Men's 100 metres butterfly. At the 2010 Games in Delhi, Ryan Pini won a silver medal in the same event. At Glasgow 2014, it was the weightlifters who took to the podium, with Dika Toua winning gold, and a new Games Record, in the 53kg Women’s competition; and Steven Kari winning gold in the 94kg Men's.

The Papua New Guinea National Olympic Committee is responsible for the country's participation in the Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth Youth Games.
