The Cooperative Republic of Guyana lies in the north-east of South America and borders Suriname, Brazil and Venezuela. It joined the Commonwealth in 1966.
Guyana has a remarkable record of attending every Games since 1930 bar three enjoying gold, silver and bronze medal successes along the way, including gold on the athletics track in 1934 and 2002 and in the boxing ring in Edmonton 1978. Continuing their success on the track, Aliann Pompey finished second in the Women's 400 metres at the Delhi 2010 Games.
The Guyana National Olympic Committee was finally recognised in 1948 after becoming established during 1935, it is responsible for their participation in the Commonwealth Games and the Commonwealth Youth Games.
